چکیده

We present rst results from our eorts toward translation of spontaneously spoken speech. Improvements include increasing coverage, robustness, generality and speed of JANUS, the speech-to-speech translation system of Carnegie Mellon and Karlsruhe University. Recognition and Machine Translation Engine have been upgraded to deal with requirements introduced by spontaneous human to human dialogs. To allow for development and evaluation of our system on adequate data, a large database with spontaneous scheduling dialogs is being gathered for En-glish, German and Spanish. 1. OVERVIEW JANUS [1, 2] has been among early systems to attempt the translation of spoken dialogs. It had initially been built based on a speech database of 12 read dialogs of the conference registration task, encompassing a vocabulary of around 500 words. It was designed as a speaker-independent system which translates spoken utterances from English and also from German into one of German, English or Japanese.

Janus: towards Multilingual Spoken Language Translation

In our effort to build spoken language translation systems we have extended our JANUS system to process spontaneous human–human dialogs in a new domain, two people trying to schedule a meeting. Trained on an initial database JANUS-2 is able to translate English and German spoken input in either English, German, Spanish, Japanese or Korean output. To tackle the difficulty of spontaneous human–hu...

JANUS: a Multi-lingual Speech-to-speech Translation System for Spontaneously Spoken Language in a Limited Domain

Janus is a multilingual speech translation system currently operating in the domain of meeting scheduling. Translating spontaneous speech requires a high degree of robustness to overcome the dissuencies of spoken language as well as errors in speech recognition. In this system description, we focus on the robust speech translation components in Janus|the skipping GLR* parser, the segmentation o...

JANUS-II-translation of spontaneous conversational speech

JANUS-II is a research system to design and test components of speech-to-speech translation systems as well as a research prototype for such a system. We will focus on two aspects of the system: 1) new features of the speech recognition component JANUS-SR, 2) the end-to-end performance of JANUS-II, including a comparison of two machine translation strategies used for JANUS-MT (PHOENIX and GLR*).

Input Segmentation of Spontaneous Speech in JANUS: A Speech-to-speech Translation System

JANUS is a multi-lingual speech-to-speech translation system designed to facilitate communication between two parties engaged in a spontaneous conversation in a limited domain. In this paper we describe how multi-level segmentation of single utterance turns improves translation quality and facilitates accurate translation in our system. We define the basic dialogue units that are handled by our...

Speech{language Integration in a Multi{lingual Speech Translation System

In this paper we report on our e orts to combine speech and language processing toward multi-lingual spontaneous speech translation. The ongoing work extends our JANUS system e ort toward handling spontaneous spoken discourse and multiple languages. A major objective of this project is to maximize the number of modules, methods and data structures that are language-independent and extensible to...
